How many years ago was it that I studied painting with Erle Loran in Berkeley? I remember his paintings of the houses on the California Coast. Rocks and pieces of wood on the beaches. Deep blue black. Dark green. Pastel colors in the foreground. Unexpected white. The way the forms were abstract but not abstract. Jagged but smooth. Rectangular but not rectangular.
