Looking East, at the hills
and then back down to the sketch pad on her lap, Helen was sitting on the grass
just below the iron structure where the guard sat.
As her hand moved colored pencils
in small, controlled strokes,
the Tarclaver hills appeared on the paper.
Her drawing did not include the guard house or the sharply barbed fence.
Older faculty took guard duty seriously.
Only Willard and Trockelheim never polished
the gold buttons on their uniforms or
blacked the toes of their knee high boots.
